This ‘bow sling’ handbag from Karen Millen has got to be one of the neatest mid-range bags I’ve seen for the new season yet: it’s got the slouchy-smart balance absolutely spot-on, has a subtly contrasting colour scheme and looks like it would go with almost any outfit you might throw on in the next six months.

I spotted this unusually-shaped Pineider handbag over at Forzieri earlier, where I spent a good few seconds trying to figure out whether I was viewing it from the front or the side, confused by its uncanny likeness to the end of a sports bag. Once I’d established that the bag was indeed face on, however, I took quite a liking to this irregular item, which is prettily decorated with brogue edging and tassels.

I don’t care how hip or insider-y or snobby the Nina Ricci brand has become since handing of the design help to Olivier Theyskens in 2006, I’m not paying $2,700 for the Nina Ricci Calf Tote . Every fashionista has a line of price ridiculousness which they cannot force themselves to cross, and Theyskens has found mine. Everyone needs a functional black leather tote in their lives, that much I’ll agree with – it’s a wardrobe standard that most people can appreciate, even if fashion (and bags in general) are not a huge part of their lives

There are some exceptionally cute mid-range bags around at the moment and here’s another that could fast become a long-term prospect: it’s by Modalù and ticks all the right boxes if you’re looking for something feminine and wardrobe-friendly. It’s also available in black, which would be super useful in terms of matching, but I rather like the warm shade of purple shown here.

You know, I didn’t really expect Yves Saint Laurent to go along with the stud trend. Their bags are so consistently understated and sleek that I didn’t think they’d subscribe to such an edgy and obvious trend, but I was wrong, and very happily so. I have to admit here that Paul’s Boutique is a bit of a grey area in my fashion know-how, mostly because I can’t figure out who it appeals to. I don’t mean by this that I dislike the look in all cases – but where I live it seems to be loved by teenaged girls and middle-aged mums, the fashion conscious and the jumble sale addict leading me to ask, perplexed, who is the Paul’s Boutique girl? In the case of this bag though, it’s fairly obvious who the brand is aiming at: 8-year-old girls and women who still want to be 8-year-old girls

Tatty Devine still maintain an edge over the competition when it comes to quirky, playful jewellery, but this is also how they get away with keeping their prices so high. I’ve certainly collected a few miniature pieces from their two London boutiques over the years, but have never yet satisfied my craving for a giant-scale necklace or pair of stunning Minna Parikka shoes.

Diesel’s Black Gold capsule collection has helped shed the label’s ‘jeans’ image and has taken it to new and more imaginative places recently, so I was delighted to see the range continue to blaze a trail with its latest for Autumn/Winter 09. I’m particularly keen on the small handbag, above left and below, which is available to buy on Diesel’s site : The natrual tan colouring is offset beautifully by the studded embellishments around the bag’s straps, and I love the ruching at the side.
